On 10th February 2026, the NAMASTE team welcomed Professor Richard Velleman to deliver a highly engaging online workshop on ‘How to Think About Designing a Quantitative Research Study’. Richard is Co-director of the Addictions Research Group at Sangath India, and Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychology at The University of Bath, was therefore able to draw on over 50 years of experience during the session.

Richard Velleman’s Research Explorer profile

The session was very well attended with 44 delegates taking part across four countries globally: India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. Participants ranged from postgraduate students and early career researchers to senior colleagues and included both research and non-research colleagues. The diverse mix of attendees enabled a dynamic question and answer session at the end of the workshop.

Whilst the session had a particular focus on Child Health and Development, it also addressed key considerations relevant to designing quantitative research more broadly. Delegates were guided through decisions involved in designing a robust study, from clarifying research questions to selecting the most appropriate measurement, sampling, and ethical considerations.

In addition, Richard kindly designed a practical handout for delegates as well as offering post-session support. These resources will enable participants to apply the concepts discussed to their own research development and will continue to support their research work well beyond the workshop itself.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks once again to Richard for supporting our ongoing capacity building activities! We look forward to continuing to provide opportunities for learning and professional development in the future.
